There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. ~~~ Douglas Adams

Faith vs Belief

To me "faith" is a reasonable expectation of something based on it's previous demonstrated behavior. For instance. I have "faith" that when i go to the store they will have diet Canada Dry ginger ale in stock. On the other hand accepting into your reality something that does against logic, reason and physics, THAT is a "belief". The subjective assessment of uncertainty. For instance i may believe it to be a certainty that if i run really fast that i would be able to run through a brick wall. That does not make it true however. Again using the same analogy i have faith that if i run into a brick wall that i will slam against it very hard and hurt myself *LOL*.

I think differentiating between the two is important when talking about religious theology. Because a persons religous belifs are just that, their own beliefs. There may be many people who share in the same belief but does not make one belief any more or less real or valid than the next person with their own beliefs. Each "believes" a certain thing and each "believes" that certain thing to be correct over everything else. They can't ALL be the only right way.

Now i said that to say this *LOL* ... To me a persons religious beliefs have nothing to do with real spiritual development. A belief just dictates the way you act and think. Real spiritual development purifies the body, mind and soul and is beneficial to every living thing. Religious beliefs are based on outer influences ad experiences. Spirituality comes from within. Some religions try to confuse this by saying you have to ask a deity into your heart to forgive you. But they are still separate things. Belief is the result of how your mind processes information and experiences and spirituality is the internal process of one nourishing their own soul. Make sense? I hope so coz that was a lot of typing *LOL*.

Anyway that's my broken down view of belief vs faith ... not that anyone asked for it hehe :-P

Where's Howard Beale when you need him?

I was just reading that in the mid 60's an hour long tv show, if you take out the commercials, was 51 minutes long. That's of actual tv show time. As of 2007 an hour long show minus commercials is only 42 minutes long. Nine extra minutes of advertising. Advertising is a networks bread n butter. Ad space on a popular show goes for anywhere from the hundreds of thousands of dollars for 30 seconds to up into the millions for a prime spot in something like the super bowl. Now given those kinds of numbers it seems that either the networks have gotten that much more greedier, or the productions costs (actors, cameramen, stage hands etc) have skyrocketed. I thinks maybe it's a little of both.

I think it's just more 'conditioning' to make people into better little consumers. Dumb tv down to the point you don't even have to think so you become nice and vegetative then bombard you with all that 'buy this, buy that. you can't live without this gadget' advertising. Now mind you i'm all for some mindless entertainment but there is a gar disproportionate percentage of cerebral programming to mindless entertainment shows. Which is sad because these days people get most alll of their information on the tv. If it wasn't on the tv it didn't happen. Right? It's sad but who actually reads anymore? Not many. I just miss the good ole days. When people were "smarter" *LOL*

How Exciting!

So i've been hearing the last few days about something new in Google's future that sounds VERY exciting. Google Me. Another 'social networking' implementation by Google. They are supposed to be devoting much more resources to this than to it's social networking en devours in the past. That have all of the makings of a GREAT social networking machine such as Buzz and google profiles and wave etc. Now if they can make them all work together i think it could be HUGE and give facebook a run for it's money! I'm very excited about this and will be paying close attention to it's progress...

Oops...How did that get there?

Oh look. I seem to have stolen a copyrighted government graphic...OOOPS! haha...

Sad...Very Very Sad

"I only went into the water up to my ankles. That's as far as I wanted to go," said Joe Chambers, 28, of West Pensacola as he scrubbed off oily residue from himself and his son, Ethan, 4, in the public showers at Casino Beach. "It doesn't smell like the beach. It smells like a gas station. There are no fish in the water. There's nothing alive in the water. I don't know how public officials can just look at the water and make a call to reopen it for swimming."

Carol Doster of Grand Isle, Miss., said her son Dallas, 12, was frightened by the oil that streaked his legs and arms after a five-minute swim in the Gulf on Friday. "It won't rub off," Doster said.

She said the two were not going to get in the water again. After the 4th I am going to go down to Pensacola and SEE AND SMELL for myself. please understand most of Florida is fine. I just question the officials running the beaches keeping them open with the smell of gas in the air.

So Infuriating

This is yet another reason why religion is nothing but a menace. Choosing your faiths doctrine over your own brother. I can't abide anything that teaches that is the way to do things.

American Pride And The Seven Deadly Sins

I was noticing the other night how America and Americans are so prideful. Then i thought well wait a minute. Isn't pride one of those seven deadly sins the Christians, whose faith America is incorrectly claimed to be founded on, find so detestable?

So i started thinking on that some more and realized that for being so high and mighty righteous America sure does commit quite a few of these deadly sins.

Let's see. First we have greed. American capitalism is ALL about greed. More money more money more money no matter the cost to people or the planet. Just pure unbridled greed and it feeds upon itself.

Next we have sloth. America has become so complacent riding on the dead wave of the the greatness that it did ONCE have that it has become last in the developed world in almost everything. Health, education, worker rights, jobs inventiveness and development esp in the areas of new safer fuels. That would go back to the greed of the traditional energy companies though. And the people have become so compliant and sheep like. Just keep new episodes of american idle and yellow journalism and then government and companies can do as they please.

Next is pride. America is so full of itself with pride that when it is doing so poorly in so many ways. That kind of pride is deadly to American and the world.

Next, lust. It's the American way. You have it, we want it, we take it. Just ask the native american indians, all of the countries that have been invaded for their oil or some other recourse that american companies wanted to capitalize on. Or some piece of land that was "strategically desirable" to the government for whatever reason. See, Want Take.

Next is gluttony. America leads the way by far in consumerism and wastefulness. And pollution.

And don't forget wrath. The american war machine is the biggest in the world and gets the most funding out of anything. Even education. Even for all of the humanitarian things america does and has done it is still an aggressive war machine.

Now don't get me wrong. America does have a lot going for it and does do a lot of good things. But i think it should not delude itself into thinking it is so great without doing the thinks to make it as great as it thinks it is.

I just thought this was an interesting thing to examine. Comments? Feedback?

Mork calling Orsen

I don't give fake apologies. I don't say things i don't mean so i don't apologize without meaning it.Understand that i think about things and analyze things on different levels. I guess you would call it compartmentalizing. I can give a heartfelt apology for upsetting someone even though i don't feel that what upset a person was not such a big deal then post about not understanding and analyze that on another level but it does not lessen whatever apology i make. I guess that could come off as double talk or being hypocritical. I guess being of a more rational or analytical mind set i just don't take things as personally as some people do. I tend to think more in "the grand scheme" of things and little things that apparently seem to offend some other people on a personal level just aren't worth it to me. Anger and always looking for things to be angry about, and letting it get to you, hinders your ability to practice compassion and loving kindness.I did used to be like that however. After 4 years of meditation i just see things a little differently. So someone makes a snarky comment. So what? How does it REALLY matter? If someone calls me an asshole, so what? What is it really hurting? My ego? My pride? To me ego and pride are intangible illusions of the id. How do you hurt something that is an illusion?

Well i guess a deeper understanding does come with a certain level of seeming detachment in certain ways. It's possible that such a thing could lead to saying something that could be taken in a way it was not intended by people who are emotional on a more base level. I don't know.

Looks like i have even more to meditate on.

Jim's Pancakes

Jim's Pancakes

My Trusty Steed

I gave up my car in favor of a bicycle. The idea was to reduce my carbon footprint so i sold my car even to make sure i would use it. I knew if i still had a car i would never ride it. Well once i got it i fell in love with bike riding.

It's an exercise i can actually DO for one thing, given the issues i have with my hands and feet. And i love not being enclosed within the shell of a car and separated and isolated. So here's a pic of my bike for your viewing pleasure!

From Blogger Pictures

Here's some hypocrisy for you

I call hypocrisy saying that you believe in "God" which would mean that you would also have to believe that the bible is also the divine and infallible WORD of god. Believing that, you would have to believe in the threat of hell for not obeying the word of "God".

So i submit to you that it is the ultimate in hypocrisy to say you believe in "God" but but then saying you don't DO what "God" says because, and i quote, "I don't want anyone telling me i have to be good."

Riiiiiight...

I DO work very hard to practice what i preach as best i can given the resources that i have and as well as circumstances will allow and live up to the spiritual expectations i have for MYSELF. But perfect i am not nor do i make any claim or implication or indication or insinuation of being so. But a hypocrite...Well...I'm not that either...

Keep your redeemer in your pants...I was born just fine the first time...

So today i got into a conversation about how the Christians are oh so picked on because they don't get to spread their disease wherever they want whenever they want. That makes me so...sick...They think they have some divine right given them by some imaginary being in the sky that they can do anything they want. Well this person was so determined that she was going to MAKE me listen to what she wanted to say that i had to fight to get in a response...typical...you hear what i say but whatever you say is unimportant because you don't have the divine right of "God"

When people, ie: Atheists, or people of other religions, push back at having Christian beliefs forced on them then the Christians cry that they are not being allowed to be free to practice their religion. Organized religion is behind all of the worlds problems throughout history in one way or another. It's a menace and the world would be better off without it.

'Nuff said...

Temper Temper and Who's Bad Behavior

Over the past few day i have been presented with some issues that have given me the opportunity to observe a few interesting behaviors..

Recently my cousin had his girlfriend over on my grandma’s birthday. The rest of the family were over as well for dinner for my grandma’s birthday. My cousins girlfriend was sitting at the dinner table when everyone was trying to eat burping and farting and bragging about it. To me anyone with any sense of decency would find this awful and offensive. So i made a jokey post about it on facebook. People made a few funny comments and got a good chuckle. Haha then it was done and forgotten.

Apparently this is somehow tarnishing the family honor and making fun of my cousin in some way. If i had a girlfriend who behaved like that when i took her to my family’s house for my grandma’s birthday dinner then i would expect some comments. she does it so deal with it.

My aunt suddenly decided to defend her, whom she does not like, and says she has brain damage. She does not have brain damage that keeps her from knowing good behavior from bad. She just has no manners.

I also happened to join a few groups about it being rude for people to come over unannounced. Well you know family comes over that’s different. And my aunt is moving in this is her home now so naturally you don’t have to be announce in your own home or if someone comes to see her they wouldn’t have to be announced to ME. That applied to me specifically. Me, myself and i. If a friend or whoever comes to see me specifically then yes i prefer them to call first. I don’t go to other peoples houses without doing the same.

My aunt assumed it’s all about her so naturally went off without asking what’s this supposed to mean or anything. She lashes out before she thinks. Anyway. I try to explain myself to some people in my family and it’s like i’m speaking in Martian. They just don’t understand.

They all say if i make jokes about my cousins girlfriends horrible manners then it’s like making fun of him and it tarnishes the family honor whatever that means. Family pride is an illusion, a joke. A handed down false sense of self importance.

Anyway it’s my feeling that my aunt should have approached me like a grown up and told me she was offended by my post and i would have taken it down gladly and apologized. Instead she blows up and lashes out. I don’t find that an aproppiate way to handle something like that by an adult. Let alone an adult in their 50;s.

But instead of dealing with anything my family prefers to sweep things under the rug and make them go away. I’m of a moe rational and logical mind and prefer reality. I would prefer to deal with something and get it resolved rather than to ignore it. So given that i just can’t understand why i feel like i am being punished for the poor behavior of others.

I have a feeling i will be meditating on these things for some time to come.

Someone please wake me up...

I've just heard this on the Mike Malloy show and he says he's not sure if it's 100% true or not but he is going with it being true until he can research it further which is how i am going to proceed as well. So this may or may not be completely true after the Pixies canceling a show. So here is the story...

The Pixies cancelled a show in Israel. The promoter of the show then called the Pixies "cultural terrorists" because they decided to not play in Israel. As if that were not outlandish enough...CANADA jumped on the bandwagon and announced it was official denouncing the pixies as a terrorist organization and placing them on it's terrorist watch list...

This is just insanity. I swear i have to be in some parallel reality. This is just too ridiculous to be happening in the real world...WTF...I'm just so totally speechless with disbelief over this...It's just unreal...

Feeling Angry but still having compassion

I find myself feeling very angry at those who have caused this oil spill eco disaster. I find the value that they put on money over life to be purely evil and i want them to come to some sort of painful justice.

But at the same time i feel compassion for them that they have gone so far astray. It's not easy to reconcile the two feelings.
